The Limit Breaks (2004-2006)

I would rate ‘The Limit Breaks’ as the band that actually showed me the local rock scene and brought me out of the entire college gigs era. And I give Eugene Rebello (the vocalist) credit to a lot of things that he taught me when were together in the band. I still remember him bribing every week with something to ensure that I come for band practices.
So, this how it all began. Eugene was looking out for a bassist when he met me. He attended the Carma fete when I was performing with Wateva and asked me to join the band. I agreed to join ‘The Limit Breaks’ as I enjoyed the genre that the band was into. TLB was one of the very few punk bands in the city at that time. I remember there were just two major punk bands in Mumbai then. One was ‘Tripwire’ and the other one was ‘The Limit Breaks’.
We covered bands like Good Charlotte, Greenday, Sum 41, Blink 182, MXPX etc and a few originals. We played a lot of shows around the city. The first show we ever played was in 2004 at Razz berry Rhinosauras .It was called ‘Smells like Punk Spirit’. It was held on Kurt Cobains death anniversary.
We got a lot of shows after that. Although, there is one gig that I distinctly remember.
We were scheduled to perform at an annual rock competition called Mood Indigo ‘Livewire’. It was the elimination round and we had to go up on stage around 1 – 2pm. So I left college a little early and reached the venue.
As we sat up there, I watched the other bands performing for the elimination. Majority of them were rock and metal bands. There was just another punk band in the competition apart from us. Now the thing that sucked in Mumbai rock scene at that time was that people would only support heavy metal music. Punk Rock was not widely accepted yet so I was quite sure that we would either get booed or thrown off the stage. And I really wasn’t ready for that.
So I tell my vocalist and drummer that I’m going for a short stroll and would be back soon. I leave the venue and head home straight. Can you beat that!!! I just leave and betray my band.LOL. That decision still cracks me up till now.
Well, let’s continue with the story. I get like a million calls from Eugene but I just ignored them because I didn’t know what to tell him. I go home and sleep the entire afternoon. Once I woke up in the evening, I shamelessly called Eugene to get an update on what happened. As expected he was a bit upset with me and well I deserved it for sure. The drummer was really pissed and it seems he was abusing me big time. He was in fact so pissed that he started searching for new bassists to join the band. Eugene tried to tell him that it’s fine and that I wouldn’t ever make that mistake again. I told Eugene that I’ll be more committed to the band too. Thankfully we all got over that incident in sometime. The drummer eventually left the band and we got a new drummer in.
‘The Limit Breaks’ played a lot of gigs after that at different venues. We got a new guitarist who joined us for sometime before he left abroad. So we were back again with the 3 of us playing at more venues. We hit the studio (Throatlatch Studios) as well and got our original ‘Where I Rule’ recorded. The experience in the studio was fun too. We were recording the entire day and didn’t realize that we missed the last train to go home. We spend that night in the studio which was fun. The song was released in a Rock Compilation album called ‘We are the Scene’. We did get some good reviews of the song from everyone.
We finally disbanded in the year 2006 cause of other commitments and work but the experience that all of us had together in ‘The Limit Breaks’ is unforgettable. Here’s a song ‘Where I rule’ with a few pics of ‘The Limit Breaks’ in the background.
